CWMAMAN ROAD
We are one of the largest populations in Carmarthenshire outside of the larger towns and benefit from our beautiful natural landscape at the foot of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
The story below will take you through to a variety of information relating to Cwmaman and will provide a range of opportunities for you to engage with your fellow community members.
THE STORY
Cwmamman (later Welsh version: Cwmaman), is an area of the Amman Valley which is comprised of the villages of Garnant and Glanamman in the county of Carmarthenshire.
The modern semi-rural landscape is the legacy of what was once a remote sparsely populated agricultural area which underwent a dramatic industrial revolution, centred around coal mining and tinplate in the 19th century.
Cwmamman experienced a large influx of people who sought employment in the coal mines which produced the best anthracite coal in the world. The high quality of the fuel also meant that while the coal industry as a whole went into decline, Cwmamman was able to supply anthracite for domestic use because it burned cleanly, producing comparatively little smoke.
The last major coal mine in the village closed in 1947 and the re-landscaping of the area has resulted in the verdant hillsides which we see today.
Heather clad upper slopes of the southern reaches of the Black Mountains and the bubbling rivers add to the natural beauty of Cwmamman, making it an ideal area for tourists who share an interest in rustic walks, social history, geology and wildlife, not to mention Arthurian enthusiasts, who would delight in the part that the Amman Valley played in the story of Cylhwch ac Olwen from the Mabinogion.

Cwmaman for the Future
Join us in building Cwmaman's future together...
Cwmaman Town Council, and Cwmaman as a whole, is one of the communities in Carmarthenshire which has a duty under the Well-being of Future Generations Act. This law has provided a great deal of opportunity for our community and has inspired the development of many projects to bring benefit to all.
A key part of this has been the consultations undertaken by Cwmaman Town Council's Community Development Officer and the 3rd sector organisations Amanwy Development Services. The feedback from local residents has assisted in securing funding, developing unique and inspirational projects/services designed to meet the needs and desires of residents and visitors.
This is an on-going process and one which will always strive to reflect the most up-to-date needs within Cwmaman. To ensure this is the
case it's vital that communication between various organisations within Cwmaman is open and on-going.
